Food and Drink Policy

At the pre-school we understand the need to promote a healthy diet for all children and ensure all dietary needs are catered for. We encourage children to try a variety of foods from different cultures and religions.

Food
Asking parents to inform us about any special dietary needs or allergies when they visit the setting prior to their child's starting date.

Informing the parents of the importance of keeping the pre-school updated of any changes to these needs.

Ensuring all staff and parents are aware of any food allergies. This information is obtained from the parent at the point of enrolment and asking parents to provide meals free from any products which children have an allergy to.

Including foods from different cultures and religions in our planning and inviting parents in to cook and share with the children these different foods. Details are communicated through the parent's newsletter.

Providing snacks that are healthy, different, from a variety of culture and religions, as well as being interesting and fun.

Making meal times a social time with all children and staff participation.

Asking parents to provide their child's packed lunches with an ice pack in them to keep chilled food cool.

Ensure children understand the importance of washing their hands before eating and provide facilities for them to do so.

Drink
Ensuring fresh drinking water is available to the children at all times and encouraging children to ask freely for drinking water.

Giving children the choice of fresh water or full fat pasteurised milk at snack times.

Understanding it is important for children to increase their intake of fluids at certain time such as during the summer months, after exercise and while taking some medications.
