Policies & Procedures |
Health and Safety PolicyThe Health and Safety of the children and any adults attending our setting is of paramount importance. In order to ensure the health and safety of both the children and adults working at the pre-school, we will: Have a nominated member of staff responsible for health and safety issues. Their name will be displayed on the notice board along with the necessary health and safety poster. Ensure that the nominated person has full training to enable them to carry out their role efficiently and with due care. Ensure that all other members of staff and volunteers have health and safety training as part of their induction and continue to update this training. Complete safety checks on all premises, both outdoors and indoors before every session to ensure they are clean, safe and free from any hazards such as rubbish or glass and are in good working order. Check equipment/toys daily, as it is put out for each session and remove any broken or damaged items from use. Keep a register of all children, staff and visitors in the pre-school daily and a diary to show if any visitors are expected. Indicate in the register when any visitor has left in case of the event of a fire. Keep all entrances to the pre-school locked during session time. Ensure that all children are supervised by adults at all times and will always be within sight of an adult during both inside and outside play. Only allow members of staff with an enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau and who are registered child carers with Ofsted have unsupervised access to the children, e.g. helping them with toileting. Always have 2 adults on the premises whenever children are present. Not let children have unsupervised access to the kitchen. Supervise all cooking activities and ensure
that children are kept away from hot surfaces, hot water and any electrical
equipment. Ensure that all surfaces used for food, such as cooking, snacks and lunchtimes are cleaned before being used. Keep all cleaning materials out of the reach of children. Keep all electrical points, wires and heaters adequately guarded and checked regularly. Encourage the children to learn about personal hygiene. We will ensure they wash their hands after using the toilet, after any messy play such as painting, sand and playdoh etc and before handling any foods such as cookery and meal times. Use paper towels for children to dry their hands and expect them to put used towels in the bin provided. Ensure any other towels used during the sessions are removed daily and washed. Ensure that the toilets are checked to make certain they are clean and usable at the beginning of each session. Ask parents to provide a spare set of named clothes for their child should they have any accident whilst at pre-school. Soiled clothes will be put in a plastic bag for collection by the parent at the end of the session. Provide tissues and wipes. Children will be encouraged to wipe their noses when necessary and put soiled tissues into the bin provided. Encourage children to shield their mouths when coughing. Only use non-toxic materials such as paints and glue. Only use play sand, which is checked before being put out. Fire Safety We believe it is important for children to understand the dangers of fire and how to behave in the event of one. Therefore we have a clear fire drill procedure, which is acted out once a term. All fire doors are clearly marked and never obstructed. All adults are responsible for ensuring that these doors are kept clear and should they find them obstructed remove the obstruction immediately without question. Fire drill training is part of the staff induction and takes place in the first week of employment. The fire drill procedure is as follows: The supervisor alerts the Pre-school by blowing a whistle. Collects the register and takes the children, with the assistance of the parent helper, through the appropriate fire exit, to the assembly point (on the basket ball area next to the car park). One member of staff will telephone the Fire Brigade, then report back to the supervisor that this has been done. One member of staff checks the building for any remaining children/adults, then leaves the building via the appropriate fire exit and reports back to the supervisor that the building is clear. If they have not been able to check any area of the building due to the fire they will inform the supervisor. Once all are assembled the supervisor takes the register to ascertain all children and adults are present. In the event of a real fire the supervisor will report to the Chief Fire Marshall all information reported to them such as, all areas of the building, which have been cleared of children and staff and the location of the fire if known to them. On returning to the building the register is then taken again to ensure all children are present. The children are reassured that it was only a pretend situation and everyone is safe. The drill is recorded - date, time and signed. First Aid Amongst the staff there are 4 qualified first aiders on site at any session. We seek permission from parents to provide emergency medical advice or treatment on their behalf during their child's time at pre-school. Parents are asked to sign, date and return their 'Consent Form' before their child starts attending any sessions. Our First Aid Kit: Complies with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. Is checked on a regular basis and restocked as necessary by a designated person regularly. Is kept out of the reach of children but is accessible to adults. Our Accident Book All accidents to children and adults are logged in the Accident Book. The Health and Safety Officer reviews the book every half term to flag any areas of concern and communicates these concerns, along with any action that is required to be taken, to the management committee. All staff know where the book is kept and how to fill in a report. Sickness The Pre-school ask parents to keep their children at home if they: Have any infections. Are suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea. They should not return until 48 hours after their last attack. Require the administration of Paracetamol to reduce a high temperature. Parents are requested to: Inform the pre-school of any infection so they can alert other parents and make careful observations of any child who seems unwell. Check the notice board for a list of incubation/symptoms of common childhood illnesses. Should your child become sick during pre-school we will: Contact the parent first to inform them of the child's condition and request that they collect them as soon as possible. If the parent arranges for a family member
or friend to collect the child, we require the parent to inform us who
is collecting the child and the relationship to the child so if this
is not a registered person the pre-school can ask for identification
upon their arrival. If the parent is not contactable we will phone the emergency contact number supplied and ask them to collect the child, the same procedure will apply for this situation as above. Ofsted are notified of any infectious diseases, which a qualified medical person considers notable. Medicines If your child requires any medication administered such as cough preparation or antibiotics during their time at pre-school parents should: Complete an Administration of Medicine form, which can be obtained by asking a member of staff on arrival at pre-school. All information must be completed in full and handed to a member of staff along with the medicine. At the end of the session sign the record to acknowledge the administration of the medicine. The Pre-school staff will: Check the form to ensure the information is completed in full and ask any questions before the parent leaves the pre-school. Put the medicine in a safe place out of reach of all children. Ensure the parent signs the record at the end of the session and return the medicine to the parent. If the administration of prescribed medication
requires medical knowledge, individual training is provided for the
relevant member of staff by a Healthcare Professional. In the unlikely event of a child becoming lost the following steps will be taken: One member of staff and the parent helper will remain with the Pre-school and all other available staff will initiate a search for the child. We will contact the Police and parents straight away. During the search a member of staff will
keep in contact with the Pre-school via a mobile phone giving up to
date information to be relayed to the Police on their arrival. Insurance We have public liability insurance and employers' liability insurance. The certificate is displayed on the notice board in the entrance hall. Smoking We operate a No Smoking Policy on the premises and ask all adults, staff and visitors to observe this. Outings and Visits: We have agreed procedures for the safe conduct of outings. Operational plans are drawn up for all outings and visits. Parents are notified of the venue in advance. Our adult to child ratio is high, normally one adult to two children therefore we would require parental involvement. A record is made of vehicles used to transport any children, with named drivers and insurance cover. We would have a designated person responsible
for taking a First Aid Kit, a register of attendance and emergency contact
numbers and a telephone. |
